"How do you know about all this AI stuff?"
I just read tweets, buddy.

I would I could tag this "hallucinations" but it's... it's a much different kind of hallucination.

It's from a TikTok account that is being used to make weird stuff go viral and get people to sign up for a newsletter. Check the quote tweets for discussions of racism and just... a lot of takes. A lot. Many.

Automatic captioning of data-driven graphics is always fantastic for accessibility, but there are a few other fun nuggets in there, too, like categorization of chart-reading errors.

Simple edits to images via text. The actual HF Space demo is located here and it's pretty easy to get both wonderful and less-than-spectacular results.

Stable Bias: Analyzing Societal Representations in Diffusion Models

The academic paper version of the beautiful Bloomberg piece Humans are biased. Generative AI is even worse.. Another choice rec from Meredith Broussard.

I can't find it now, but there was a QT that pulled out a response along the lines of "you're just not using the right model, find a better model."

This is going to come up again and again and again in terms of bias and other issues, and we need to acknowlege that it's a pretty absurd reaction. Boundless trust in tech, availability of alternatives, etc etc etc – the onus absolutely can't be on the end user.

How to Use AI to Do Stuff: An Opinionated Guide

#generative art and visuals   #generative text   #explanations and guides and tutorials   #models   #link

This is a pretty thorough, none-technical guide on the AI tools available for use. It doesn't dig too deep, but it's a heck of a useable list. For example:

Make images

Most transparent option: Adobe Firefly Open Source Option: Stable Diffusion Best free option: Bing or Bing Image Creator (which uses DALL-E), Playgound (which lets you use multiple models) Best quality images: Midjourney

Nice, 'eh?

This book is SO GOOD if you want to get into the nuts and bolts of how image analysis works. It's from a bio point of view but again, SO GOOD.

AI learned from their work. Now they want compensation.

This thread dances around a bit but has some really good nuggets in it.

AI mediates a deeply flawed and exclusionary understanding of the world.

This understanding of the world is from pulling nigh-infinite amounts of information from the internet.

What's in the sausage though? According to Chat GPT 4, apparently DALL•E "is not explicitly trained on art but on a wide range of images from the internet".

Mmh, so it's the internet's fault?

We know that the majority of content on the internet is produced by a minority of its users, with a significant portion coming from Western, English-speaking users.

Where does this lead?

AI’s understanding of art (biased), informed by the internet's documentation of it (biased), is a bunch of riffs on the Western canon (biased).

Seems like a reasonable slope to slide right down.

This tweet was about someone who won a book cover illustration contest, was suspected of using AI, denied it, and then the internet went super detective-y on them. Turns out that without a doubt the cover was generated by Midjourney. Really good reading, highly recommended.

While AI detection doesn't really work, the people using the AI are plenty likely to make mistakes that you can catch.
